Rishad case: CCD to record statements from inmates

Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya yesterday (19) issued an order directing the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) to record statements from prison inmates in the case where MP Rishad Bathiudeen is alleged to have threatened the Magazine Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer.

When the matter was taken up, the Colombo Crimes Division informed the Magistrate that they wanted to obtain statements from inmates who were present at the dispensary at the time of the incident.

MP Rishad Bathiudeen appeared in Court yesterday. However, Bathiudeen has not yet been named as a suspect in the case.

A doctor serving at the Magazine Prison had lodged a complaint with the Borella police that MP Bathiudeen who was in remand custody, threatened him with death.

According to the complaint, MP Bathiudeen had obstructed the duties of the doctor while he was treating an inmate on August 15,2021. Later, the Colombo Crime Division had launched an investigation into the incident on the IGP’s orders.

Attorney Rushdi Hameed appearing on behalf of Rishad Bathiudeen requested the Magistrate to issue certified copy of the further B report to them.

After taking the request into consideration, the Magistrate stated that the release of the B report could have affected the witnesses as the report contains the names of the prison inmates whose statements are to be obtained.
