CB Bond Scam: CBSL directed to allow defence access to examine computer evidence

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) was yesterday directed by the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar to allow the defence access to examine electronic and computer evidence in the first Central Bank Bond (CB) Scam case filed against 10 accused, including former Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran, its former Deputy Governor Pattinige Samarasiri.

Accordingly, the Defence Counsels were instructed to go to the Central Bank on March 21, 22 and 23 to examine 38 computer evidence documents related to the first bond auction.

The CID was ordered by the Court to submit a report on how the evidence of private financial institutions could be examined.

The case was taken up before the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar Bench comprising High Court Judges Damith Thotawatte, Namal Balalle and Champa Chanaka Rajaratne.

The Attorney General filed an indictment against 10 accused for causing a loss of over Rs.688 million to the Government through the first Central Bank bond issue on February 27, 2015 during the period of ‘Yahapalana’ Government.

The Attorney General filed indictments against 10 accused including former Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran, its former Deputy Governor Pattinige Samarasiri, Perpetual Treasury Directors Arjun Aloysius and Jeffrey Aloysius Perpetual Treasuries CEO Kasun Palisena under the Public Property Act, for allegedly causing a loss of over Rs. 688 million at a Central Bank Bond auction held by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka on February 27, 2015.
