Ranjan ready to apologise for Contempt – Counsel

Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake serving a prison sentence for Contempt of Court yesterday told the Supreme Court that he was ready to unconditionally apologise to Court if any statement made by him caused any Contempt of the Court which was based on the second contempt case filed against him.

This was informed to Court by President’s Counsel Anura Meddegoda who appeared for Ramanayake.

The second Contempt of Court case against Ranjan Ramanayake was taken up before a three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justices S.Thurairaja and Yasantha Kodagoda.

President’s Counsel Anura Meddegoda informed Court that the premiere of a film in which Ramanayake, his clientis starring in a dual role, is scheduled to be held on March 24 and he requested the court to allow him to participate in the event for two hours under prison security.

Refusing the request made by Meddegoda PC, Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya said that Ranjan Ramanayake was currently serving his sentence after being convicted in another contempt of court case.

The Chief Justice said that the prison rules and regulations applicable to all other inmates also apply to him and that this Court does not have the power to issue orders in this regard. After considering the facts, the Supreme Court fixed the case to be taken up again on March 25.
