Sixteen suspects who were protesting against the current economic crisis yesterday and who allegedly damaged government property and disrupted traffic on the Colombo – Chilaw railway line were severely warned by Negombo Chief Magistrate Champika Rajapaksa and ordered to be released on a surety bail of Rs. 100,000 each. Around 2,000 people protested against the current economic unrest at Galkanda Junction on the Chilaw – Colombo Railway Main Road, allegedly burning tyres and damaging government property and obstructing train travel, according to a report submitted to Court by Negombo SSP Saman Sigera.
A team of senior attorneys-at-law including Nelson Kumaranayake, Indika Silva, Robert Heenkenda, Primal Amarasinghe, Nalaka Fernando, Mahinda Sugathadasa and Sakula Goonetileke appeared on behalf of the suspects.
Further hearing was adjourned for April 9.
