A stock of 18,000 foreign cigarettes illegally imported without paying taxes has been taken into custody in the Chavakachcheri area

Officers of the Excise and Anti-Narcotics Bureau of the Excise Department of Sri Lanka arrested
on 05.04.2022 a suspect in possession of a stock of 18,000 cigarettes which had been brought
into the country without paying taxes, in the Chavakachcheri area.
During the raid, 18,000 untaxed cigarettes were seized with a market value of over
Rs.1,500,000/- Excise officials said. The arrested suspect is a 39 year old resident of
Chavakachcheri.
On Wednesday,(06) on the instructions of the Commissioner General of Excise, the
Commissioner of Excise on Legal Affairs, imposed a fine of Rs. 500,000 / = on the suspect and
confiscated the stock of cigarettes.
The stock of untaxed cigarettes where seals had not even been broken, was produced in the
United Kingdom and contained cartons of 10 packets of 20 cigarettes each. Further
investigations are being carried out by Officer-In-Charge of the Excise, Anti-Narcotics Bureau
Chief Excise Inspector Thilak Dissanayake.
Excise Inspector Aruna Gamage, Excise Corporals 802 Sivakumara, 868 Sujith Desapriya, 915
Aruna, Excise Regulator 1069 Sanjaya and Excise Driver Prabhath carried out the raid on the
instructions of Commissioner General of Excise M. J. Gunasiri, under the supervision of Excise
and Anti-Narcotics Bureau, Excise Superintendent Jayantha Silva and the guidance of Officer-
In-Charge of the Excise and Anti-Narcotics Bureau,
