WHY WE DECIDED TO ORGANIZE THE FLEA MARKET IN COLOMBO, SRI LANKA
From Dubai to Colombo: A Flea Market Journey
In the bustling streets of Colombo, Sri Lanka, amidst the vibrant chaos of the city, a new venture is about to take shape – a flea market unlike any other. But the story of how it came to be traced its roots back to a different time and place, to the year 2008 and the city of Dubai.
It was a year marked by financial turmoil, a time when economies around the world trembled under the weight of the global economic crisis. For one family, this crisis struck particularly hard and whose supply business in Dubai collapsed like a house of cards, leaving John and Madz with stocks of goods and no viable avenue to dispose of them.In the midst of uncertainty and despair, they found solace and opportunity in an unexpected place – the Dubai Flea Market at Safa Park. It was here, amidst the eclectic mix of vendors and shoppers, they discovered a newfound sense of purpose. They realized that even in the face of adversity, there was still a market for their goods, a community of people eager to find value in the items they had to offer.
Month after month, they immersed themselves in the bustling energy of the flea market, forging connections with fellow vendors and customers alike and learned the ins and outs of the trade, honing their skills as a seller and gaining valuable insights into the world of flea markets.A bold idea began to take shape, in times of financial hardship and the current economic climate in Sri Lanka they envisioned bringing the magic of the flea market to Colombo. Drawing upon their resilience and determination, set out to make their vision a reality with support from Town Hall and Vihara Mahadevi Park Officials. Driven by a passion – to create a space where people could come together to buy, sell, and exchange goods, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie in the process.
AND SO THE CEYLON FLEA MARKET IS BORN.
For the couple, the journey from Dubai to Colombo had been one of transformation and triumph. What had started as a struggle to overcome adversity had blossomed into a thriving business, a testament to the power of resilience and the enduring spirit of entrepreneurship. They had found the calling – and in the process and had created something truly magical for the community they called home.
