Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that in the next few months, 1,250 leading schools in the island will be developed as Suhuru schools and will be managed by the Ministry of Education. The minister mentioned here that a grant of 20 million dollars will be received from the Chinese government.
He said this while participating in the ceremony of converting all classrooms from 1st grade to 5th grade of Colombo Sirimavo Bandaranaike Girls’ High School into friendly classrooms.
Further commenting here, the minister said that the pilot project related to the new education system expected to be implemented from next year for grades 1-6-10 has now reached its final stage and the necessary learning modules have been completed and the modular books will be delivered in the coming weeks. It will be delivered to print within two. Also, the minister said that the challenge of training teachers as well as the necessary trainers should be overcome. If this change is not made, the children leaving school in ten years will be a group that cannot face the challenges.
Mr. Susil Premajayantha said that in the future, all colleges will be merged into one university. Accordingly, the minister mentioned here that after the year 2028, the teachers will be recruited as teachers with Bachelor of Education degrees and diploma holders will not be recruited for the teaching profession in the future. He further said that according to the rapidly changing knowledge, every professional such as teachers, doctors should update their knowledge.
The minister said that the subject of aesthetics, which is the basis of primary education, will not be removed from the curriculum in any way and that there are false opinions about it, and that the school curriculum will be creatively raised to an international level of education by mixing artificial intelligence and information technology. He said that the teachers will be trained accordingly and an internationally recognized license will be given to those teachers together with Microsoft and that they will request those teachers not to leave the country.
