Five held in currency smuggling bid

Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) have arrested five individuals in an attempt to smuggle foreign currency worth nearly 40 million Sri Lankan rupees to Dubai on Wednesday night.

They have been identified as residents of Colombo. A total of USD 22,300, EUR 63,500, Saudi Riyal (SAR) 292,000, Sterling Pound (GBP) 8,725 and UAE Dirham (AED) 75,000 hidden inside their luggage have been recovered by the officials.

Three women and two men are among the arrested.
