A team of officers from the Kandy Divisional Police Anti-Corruption Unit yesterday found five grams of narcotic drugs in a letter sent through a courier service from Colombo to Kandy.
Police suspect that drugs have been couriered from Colombo to various parts of the country in this manner for a long time.
Investigations have revealed that the modus operandi to deliver drugs in this manner was to send subtly packed drugs in an envelope to a fake address and when the delivering agent is unable to find the address he or she calls the telephone number mentioned with the address and a person will meet the delivery person and will receive the envelope.
The police have been on the lookout on a tip-off that drugs were being distributed in this manner from Colombo to Kandy.
Following the revelation of the narcotics distribution system, the person who had the telephone number in the latest delivery of drugs in this manner has fled the area and the police are continuing investigations.
