Revolutionising Hospitality Education – Cinnamon Hospitality Academy opens with its first intake

Colombo, Sri Lanka, 3 December 2024: Cinnamon Hospitality Academy, a pioneering initiative by Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts and the Swiss Hotel Management Academy (SHMA), officially commenced operations by welcoming its inaugural batch of 43 (forty three) students. This partnership is set to redefine hospitality education in Sri Lanka by offering the globally acclaimed Vocational Education and Training (VET) by Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) Professional Diploma program. EHL, ranked as the world’s number one university for hospitality management, brings exceptional expertise to this collaborative initiative, to ensure students will gain a globally recognised qualification.

The launch of Cinnamon Hospitality Academy marks a milestone in empowering Sri Lanka’s future hospitality leaders. The curriculum followed at Cinnamon Hospitality Academy is based on the Swiss Gold Standard Framework, offering three specialised pathways: Culinary, Food & Beverage Service and Hotel Operations. The VET by EHL programme adopts an apprenticeship – based ‘Learn, Work & Earn’ model, combining two days of theoretical and practical learning with four days of ‘on-the-job’ training at Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts Colombo hotels. The 18-month full professional diploma with one year of work experience, prepares students to meet international standards in hospitality.

SLAF WOMEN’S JUDO TEAM CROWNS AT THE 61ST NATIONAL JUDO CHAMPIONSHIP 2024

The SLAF Women’s Judo Team clinched the overall championship at the 61st National Judo Championship 2024, marking a historic win after a decade. The championship was held from 13 to 14 December 2024 at the Sri Lanka Judo Association in Colombo 13, with the awards ceremony taking place at the same venue 15th December 2024
The event witnessed the presence of the Chairman of SLAF Judo, Air Vice Marshal Damian Weerasinghe, the Secretary of SLAF Judo, Group Captain MADCI Gunasinghe, the Assistant Secretarys of SLAF Judo, Wing Commander HDTNS Hettiarachchi and other senior officers from the tri-services, who graced the awards ceremony.

The SLAF Women’s Judo Team emerged victorious, securing the Championship title, with an outstanding haul of six gold, three silver and nine bronze medals. Meanwhile, the SLAF Men’s Judo Team delivered a commendable performance, achieving the Overall Runner-up position with an impressive tally of four gold, two silver and five bronze medals.

Adding to the team’s success, Sergeant Chamara Dharmawardana was named the ‘Best Male Judo Player' for the 8th consecutive year, while Aircraftwoman Kalpani Jayaweera earned the title of ‘Best Female Judo Player’.

Telecom ITEA skills for vocational institute students by EXEO GLOBAL and SALA ENTERPRISES

Students now looking for employment overseas can take advantage of learning ITEA Telecommunications skills seminars held by Exco Global and Sala Enterprises. This will give them a clear advantage in joining the Japanese telecommunications construction industry.

Also speaking to the media, Sala Enterprises Managing Director Chinthaka Wijewicrema said, a key market for skilled labor that has been identified is Sri Lanka, and the Japaneseassociation is looking forward to hiring quality candidates from Sri Lanka that are keen on pursuing careers in Japan. The primary purpose of seminars is to share more about the Specified Skilled Worker visa for the telecommunications construction industry, the skills and certifications needed to qualify for the visa, aswell as the legitimate approach to applying for the visa, so potential applicants can clarify their doubts and also find out more from the trainers on what is like to work in Japan and what to expect before they make a decision.

The Information & Telecommunications Engineering Association of Japan (ITEA) and JAC (Japan Association of Construction Human Resources), EXEO Global, their appointed partner, are conducting a series of seminars across 10 countries in Asia from 2024 to 2025. Therefore, this will provide accurate information to those who are interested in pursuing a career in the telecommunications construction industry in Japan.

With Sri Lanka being identified as a preferred market, the Japanese associations are looking positively towards securing high-quality candidates from Sri Lanka who are keen to pursue careers in this line of work.

Chairman of the Mahabodhi Society and Chief Incumbent of Japan Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera said that the historic Sanchi festival paves the way for creating strong religious harmony.

The Thera made these remarks while participating in the 72nd annual Sanchi Mahabodhi Mahotsavaya (Sanchi religious festival) of the Sanchi Chethiyagiri Maha Vihara, India.

Ven. Upatissa Thera added that Sanchi festival in India, which is coconsidered as a main Buddhist function of India leads for building strong bonda among various ethnic groups

This year rhe Sanchi religious festival was held with the participation of thousands of Bhikkus and devotees around the world yesterday and day before yesterday (November 30 and December 1).

During the ceremony, the relics of the Sariyut Mugalan Agrasravaka Maha Rahat Theras, were displayed for public viewing.

Every year Buddhists and others round the world visit Sanchi Chethiyagiri Maha Viharaya to pay homage to the relics in November.

Accordingly, Sanchi Mahothsawaya, which generally called as Sanchi Mela, was held in a grand manner under the guidance of Sri Lanka Maha Bodhi Association Chairman and Sanchi Chethiyagiri Vihara Chief Incumbent Most Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera.

Archeology Department of India former Director General Sir Alexander Cunningham discovered the relics of Saryut Mugalan Agrasravaka Maha Rahat Theras in 1851 during an expedition at the Sanchi Archaeological Site.

Sanchi Chetiyagiri Maha Viharaya was built after placing these relics in 1952 on a land donated by Bhopal leader Nawab at that time.

The relics of Agrasravaka are kept under an underground chamber (Suganda Kutiya) throughout the year and taken out just once a year during the Sanchi festival for public viewing.

Incumbent of Sanchi Chethiyagiri Maha Viharaya Banagala Wimalatissa Thera said tha around 100,000 devotees visit Sanchi Mela this year. Accordingly, not only Buddhists but also many others from various countries including Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, Japan China and a few other countries participated in the historic Sanchi festival this year.

It is significant that the participants have a rare opportunity to take part in this festival to pay homage to the relics of Sariyut Mughalan Maharahat Theras since the India railways have taken measures to stop most of the trains including five super express trains at Sanchi Railway Station during the Mahabodhi festive season.

Ven. Udugama Tapassi Thera said that the main function of the Mahabodhi festival is to provide an opportunity for the public to worship the relics whilst to build a strong rapport among each ethic groups.

Representing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modhi, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Shri Kiran Rijiju and several state officials of Madhya Pradesh Government took part in the festival. Besides, Tourism and Panchayat Sabha Miinister Prahalad Sing Patel participated in the festival as Chief Guest.

In line with the festival the Sri Lankan media team presented a cultural programme at the festival for the third time during the 72 years’ history of Sanchi religious event.

The 72nd Sanchi Mahabodhi Festival will be held two days from November 30 to December 1 at the Sanchi Chethiyagiri Temple Complex, in Vidisha, India.

In the 5th century BC, Emperor Ashoka built the Sanchi Stupa complex to house the relics of the Lord Buddha and the chief disciple of Sariputta and Moggallana in memory of his wife Vidisa Devi. The Sanchi Chethiyagiri Temple Complex had been under the forest for centuries and was rediscovered in 1918, and was first excavated in 1851 by Alexander Cunningham and General Macy.

Then in 1912, Sir General John Marshall restored the ruins and restored the Sanchi Chethiyagiri Temple Complex to its present state of honour.

After those excavations, the relics of Sariputta and Moggallana, the chief disciple, were taken to England. After these relics were brought back to India, Ven. Hadigalle Pannatissa Thero took the initiative to build the Sanchi Chethiyagiri Temple Complex and enshrine them there.

Under the leadership of Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thero, who has been appointed as the President of the Sri Lanka Mahabodhi Society and the Chief Incumbent of the Sanchi Chethiyagiri Temple, the Sanchi sacred site has undergone tremendous development in the last thirty years.

Ven Upatissa Thero said that the “Sanchi Maha Bodhi Festival”, which was initiated in 1952 at the request of the then Indian Prime Minister, Sir Jawaharlal Nehru, will be held for the 72nd time on November 30 and December 1 at the sacred site of Sanchi, under the leadership of the Madhya Pradesh Government of India and the Sri Lanka Mahabodhi Society.

The cultural concert to be held in conjunction with the Sanchi Mahabodhi Mahotsava will feature Japanese singer Miiki, Sri Lankan media professionals, who represent the Asian Media and Cultural Association (AMCA), and other cultural groups. Besides, Sri Lankan journalists and a large number of Buddhist devotees from Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Myanmar are also scheduled to participate in the Sanchi Mahabodhi Mahotsava this year, said Chethiyagiri Viharadhikari Ven. Banagala Wimalatissa Thero.

Chethiyagiri Viharavasi Ven. Udugama Thapassi Thero said that nearly 10 million Buddhist devotees from several states in India including Orissa, Andhra, Telangana, Ladakh, Uttar, Assam, Kerala, Himachal, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra are expected to participate in the Mahabodhi Mahotsava this year also.

The relics of Ven. Sariputta and Moggallana, the first disciple of the Lord Buddha, which are enshrined in the underground chamber of Chethigiri Vihara, will be taken out on November 30 and placed in the shrine for the public to pay homage to. Then, on the afternoon of December 1, the relics will be replaced back in the underground chamber of the temple, Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thero said.

Bodhichitta Thera of Vietnam, Minister of Rural Development of the Central Government of India Sri Prahlad Singh Patel, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh Dr. Prabhuram Chaudhary, Collector and District Magistrate of the Raisin District Aravind Kumar Dubey, Dr. Supachai Verapunchong of Thailand and a few other distinguished guests will participate in this year’s event as chief guests.

The National Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka (NCISL) recently launched its all-new website, www.helpapeksha.comwith the gracious presence of Dr.P.G.Mahipala-Secretary of Ministry of Health, Dr. Asela Gunawardena – Director General of Health Services of Ministry of Health,Mr. Shevan Goonetilleke-the Chief Executive Officer of MillenniumIT ESP, Mr.Channa de Silva-Chief Executive Officer of LankaPay (Pvt) Ltd, Mrs.AyodhyaIddawela-Managing Director at Sampath Bank PLC, Sri Lanka’s beloved musical duo Bathiya&Santhush as the Brand Ambassadors along with Mr.Umesh Gautam,-Chief Executive Officer / Managing Director of Lanka Ashok Leyland PLC, and the NCISL Hospital Director Dr. Aruna Dissanayaka along with his staff, and Dr. Binara Jayawardena with the committee members. 

This meticulously designed platform streamlines the donation process and provides greater transparency for supporters and donors across the world. The website’s development was made possible with the support of MillenniumIT ESP, a leading Sri Lankan global enterprise solutions provider. As part of their CSR initiatives, MillenniumIT ESP played a vital role in the quick development of this user-friendly platform, ensuring seamless access for donors. MillenniumIT ESP developed the website and will be maintaining it for the next three years as a CSR project of their company.

The all-new website offers a user-friendly platform that provides easy access to information regarding the NCISL’s vital work, ongoing projects, and will provide the donors the utmost transparency of their donations while giving an insight of the immediate and long-term requirements of the hospital. Securely linked to the Sampath Bank gateway, the platform allows international donors to contribute directly to specific causes, such as essential medical supplies, with the option for anonymous donations.

The National Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka’s Development Committee, established and approved by the Sri Lankan Health Ministry, goes beyond facilitating donations. The Hospital Development Committee which is comprised of visionary volunteer leaders, led by the Chairman-Mr. Binara Jayewardene has designed a 2030 plan with short, medium, and long-term planning to take the hospital to greater strides and launching the website with transparency is one of the initiatives of the 2030 plan taken by the Hospital Development Committee. They also focus on staff well-

being. Given the stressful nature of the work healthcare professionals have to endure, the committee gives back by hosting events such as Avurudhu celebrations and Wesak Bakthi Gee, to help create a positive work environment. The events also provide patients with an opportunity to interact socially and respite from their medical concerns.

Mr. Binara Jayawardena, Chairman of the Hospital Development Committee, described the project as a turning point for the hospital, which is governed under a new constitution adopted 18 months ago to bring transparency and structure to fundraising efforts. With a focus on long-term sustainability and international partnerships, the hospital aims to be a leading cancer care provider in the region.

Mr. Nishan Wasalathanthri, Chairman, of the NCISL Marketing Committee, a subcommittee which is operated under the Hospital Development Committee said, “Before the website, there was no clear direction for individuals who wished to support Apeksha Hospitals. We recognized and understood the need for increased transparency, and the need for a platform that would empower donors from around the world, who could make a significant difference in the lives of our patients.”

Additionally, the NCISL will also be launching a social media initiative to help promote its fundraising efforts across the world. The objective of the initiative is to showcase the platform where people can learn about the hospital’s projects and make donations as they see fit. In order to maintain transparency, the website showcases a comprehensive list of donors and their contributions.
