Urgent Appeal for Economic Justice Allowance for the Entire Health Workforce

Dear Sir,

Amidst widespread corruptions, frauds, thefts, and financial mismanagement plaguing various sectors, including the health service, our professionals have endured financial challenges while hoping for transformative measures. Despite our commitment to professional standards, we believe that the Ministry of Health and certain parties have not provided accurate information, creating a crisis in the country.

In addressing the common situation faced by the entire health workforce, it is imperative to rectify the neglect of economic justice. While medical officers have received an allowance of Rs. 35,000/-, the rest of the health staff, facing a financial crisis, seeks equality in treatment. We have submitted a specific proposal to the Ministry of Health and Finance, emphasizing equality and moderate influence instead of an equal allowance for resolution.

Despite a temporary suspension of strike action based on promises during a discussion with the Ministry of Finance on 16.01.2024, there has been no response since your return. We urgently request your intervention to provide a constructive solution, as our collective responsibility to maintain quality healthcare is at risk.

If the government or the Ministry of Finance fails to act constructively, 72 health trade unions, representing over 100,000 health care workers, will initiate strike actions and protests from February 1st 2024 and the continuations will be decided with the response we receive from your side . We regret to inform you of this potential and action.

We appreciate your contribution to treating the healthcare team with equality and kindly request your prompt intervention to resolve this matter.

With great regards,

On be half of the Board of Convenors

Mr. Ravi Kumudesh
Health Trade Union Alliance (HTUA)

0

The Mount Lavinia Hotel, a renowned historical landmark in Sri Lanka, made waves on 25th January 2024 as it unveiled the “MLH Plant-Earth Market”, the country’s first-ever Vegan Market. The market will operate monthly on Poya days at The Terrace, coinciding with the Hotel’s Vegan Buffet and Vegan High Tea.Visitors to the “MLH Plant-Earth Market” were treated to a wide range of vegan products, all of which were “Good Market Approved”. From vegan clothes to jewellery, musical instruments at the Drum House, arts and crafts, and household goods, attendees had access to an impressive selection of items. Meanwhile, the Hotel played host to the Vegan Lunch Buffet and Vegan High Tea. The market operated from 10 AM to 4 PM, enabling attendees to explore and indulge in the vegan offerings.

This platform was more than just a market but a celebration of the vegan lifestyle and a way for like-minded individuals to connect. The Mount Lavinia Hotel aims to continue supporting veganism and local vendors of vegan products, recognizing the importance of this movement and its positive impact on both individuals and the environment. The “MLH Plant-Earth Market” drew not only locals from Mount Lavinia but also attracted tourists and expats. Its popularity is a testament to the growing interest and awareness surrounding veganism. The Hotel also has plans to educate the local community and promote a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.

Mount Lavinia Hotel implemented the “Green Going Green” concept in 2010 during Mr. Anura Dewapura’s tenure as General Manager. With his strong advocacy for environmental sustainability, it comes as no surprise that he has re-introduced these ideas upon his return as the Chief Operating Officer of MLH Group. Recognizing the Hotel’s efforts, MLH received Bronze and Silver certifications for the Earth Check Awards in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Building on these accolades, Mr. Dewapura aims to re-introduce and refine the existing sustainable strategies to align with the evolving global standards. He firmly believes that it is the responsibility of each individual to adopt a planet-saving approach for a more favourable future.

One of the noteworthy initiatives that Mount Lavinia Hotel is reintroducing is the concept of “Slow Food.” Back in the day, the Hotel embraced this movement and actively encouraged and recognized local farmers. This approach garnered significant support from the corporate community in Colombo. Now, the Hotel has announced the return of slow food, with the first slow food event for the year scheduled for 2nd February 2024 – Slow Food Italia with Chef Riccardo.

The launch of the “MLH Plant-Earth Market” is a milestone for vegan enthusiasts in Sri Lanka. Mount Lavinia Hotel is reclaiming its position as a pioneer in green practices. Through initiatives such as the Vegan Market and other Vegan offerings, slow food, and partnerships with local communities, Mount Lavinia Hotel is leading by example and setting a new standard for the industry. As the Hotel continues to evolve and adapt to the ever-changing world, its commitment to a greener future remains unwavering, promising a more sustainable and responsible tourism experience for its Guests.

President emphasizes immediate reforms in global financial structure

Developing Nations Unduly Affected by Current SystemRevealed President Wickremesinghe at the 3rd South Summit of G77 + China

President Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing the 3rd South Summit today (21) in Kampala, Uganda, highlighted the numerous challenges the world faces, such as conflicts, pandemic repercussions, climate disasters and financial market uncertainties. The President also emphasized the disproportionate impact on vulnerable G77 economies.

In his statement, President Wickremesinghe stressed the urgency of reforming the global financial architecture. The President also pointed out that the contemporary international debt resolution architecture is more suited for a world where the Paris Club and London Club dominated global debt resolution. Currently the global debt and particularly debt in the developing world is dominated by international bond markets, and non-Paris Club lenders.

The President lamented the diversion of financial resources to debt service, hindering spending on essential public services and human development, impacting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets. He criticized the Common Framework for its inability to provide speedy debt resolution, causing delays in addressing recent sovereign debt distress in many G77 countries.

Addressing climate finance, President Wickremesinghe highlighted the failure of the global financial system to meet the Global South’s needs for mitigating and adapting to climate change. Despite commitments made in global forums, he pointed out the lack of real contributions. He introduced Sri Lanka’s Tropical Belt Initiative, aiming to catalyse private investments for global public goods, including biodiversity, oceans, and forest resources.

Expressing concern about rising protectionist tendencies in global trade, the President urged decisions to be made in multilateral forums rather than unilaterally. He emphasized the need for coordination between the G77 and BRICS to ensure the smooth efficiency of global trade and investment.

President Wickremesinghe also touched upon the challenges of job creation in developing economies, quoting Joseph Stiglitz on technological changes making manufacturing skills and capital-intensive, resulting in fewer jobs.

While advocating for global financial reforms, the President called on the G77 + China to formulate strategies for member countries to prepare for energy transition, digital transformation, the green economy, and a skilled workforce for the new global economy.

President Wickremesinghe also thanked President Museveni and the Government of Uganda for their hospitality and congratulated President Museveni on hosting the 3rd South Summit and assuming the Chairmanship of the Group of 77 + China.

The President also expressed gratitude to Cuba for its leadership during the past year and commended their effective leadership in the Havana Declaration.

As the G77 + China commemorate their 60th year, President Wickremesinghe emphasized the importance of remaining united to overcome multidimensional challenges based on the group’s founding principles of unity, complementarity, cooperation and solidarity.

As the largest alliance of developing countries within the United Nations, the G77 provided a platform for the Global South countries to express and advance their collective economic interests. It also served as a forum for joint discussions on international economic issues, fostering mutual cooperation among its member countries. The 3rd Southern Summit was convened under the theme of “Leaving No One Behind,” aiming to enhance collaboration among its 134 member nations in areas such as trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty alleviation, and the digital economy.

The presidency of the G77 + China summit, previously held by the Republic of Cuba, was assumed by the Republic of Uganda during this session.
