Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena holds discussions with Ugandan President, Prime Minister and Speaker

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena who is on an official visit to Uganda to attend the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), engaged in productive discussions with Ugandan President Hon. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Prime Minister Hon. Robinah Nabbanja and the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Anita Among.

Meanwhile the Speaker also met with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hon Oryem Henry Okello.

During the discussions, both parties delved into matters aimed at enhancing the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Uganda. The dialogue covered key areas of mutual interest, fostering cooperation and understanding to strengthen ties between the two nations.

The Speaker’s delegation included Member of Parliament Hon. Rauf Hakeem and Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera and the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Uganda Mr. Veluppillai Kananathan. The Sri Lankan delegation led by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena arrived in Uganda on 3rd of January to participate in the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) held from 3rd to 6th January 2024 in Kampala, Uganda. The conference brings together the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the national parliaments of the independent sovereign states of the Commonwealth. It was created in 1969 as an initiative of the then Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Hon. Lucien Lamoureux

Six (06) suspects and local fishing trawler with a large stock of narcotics apprehended in southern seas

A coordinated operation mounted by the Sri Lanka Navy and Police Narcotic Bureau, on the high seas south of Sir Lanka, led to the apprehension of a local fishing trawler carrying a large consignment of narcotics. Upon being held the trawler was brought to the Galle Harbour this morning (05th January 2023). Onward investigation into the incident is being carried out by the Navy and Police Narcotic Bureau

Royal Academy of Professional Studies holds 3rd Diploma Awarding Ceremony

The Royal Academy of Professional Studies had organized 3rd  Diploma Awarding Ceremony was held at the Lotus Hall, BMICH, on Saturday December 23. It was held under the patronage of Head of Academics Dr. Lukmanul Hakeem.

There are 225 reciepients received their diploma certificates in various diploma programs encompassing English, HRM, Psychology and Counseling, Teacher Training, and Montessori and  Primary Education.

Professor K.A.S. Dhammika, Professor in Management Department of HRM, University of Kelaniya was present as  chief guest and distributed certificates.

Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai marks International migrants day 2023

Consulate General of Sri Lanka to Dubai and Northern Emirates celebrated International Migrants Day, today (18.) which is observed on December 18th each year. The event brought together representatives of various charity organizations, Sahana Welfare Association and SriLankan Airlines.

International Migrants Day is an occasion to recognize the contributions of migrants around the world and to highlight the challenges they face. The Consulate General of Dubai’s celebration aimed to foster a spirit of unity and cooperation among migrants, while also raising awareness of the issues they face.

Consul General Hon. Alexi Gunasekera, Mr. Lalith Gallage, Secretary to the Sahana Welfare Association, Gayani Jayawardena, Sales Manager, SriLankan Airlines addressed the gathering.

The Pearl Hobby Craft Institute holds 7th Awards Ceremony

The Pearl Hobby Craft Institute had organized its 15th Anniversary Celebration  and 7th  Awards Ceremony was held at the Ramada Hotel, Colombo on Saturday December 9. It was held under the patronage of Mrs. Risa Fawazdeen ,  Proprietor and  Chief Instructor of the Institute.

Pearl Hobby Craft is a Training Institute Registered under the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission and affiliated by Vocational Training Authority.  Since its inception in 2009, they are conducting Vocational Training Courses such as General Cookery, Cake Making, Tailoring and Hand Crafts exclusive for Ladies.

This year 25 students received dress making and embroidery course  certificates and awards  from chief guest Mariam College Principal Mrs. Rihana Marzook. 

 

 Ananda Balika fetes its student Irajini who clinched gold medal at the South Asia Karate Championship in Nepal

The student of  Ananda Balika Vidyalaya  Ayushmanthya Irajini Karunarathne who won a Gold Medal at the South Asia Karate Championship 2023 at Kathmandu, Nepal on 3rd December was felicitated at her school.

The felicitation ceremony was held at the school premises recently.  It was held under the patronage of  Principal W.B.G. Kumudini.   

The welcome ceremony was held in a procession from Maligakanda Junction to school premises with the school band.

Deputy Principal D.N. Sumanasena,  Vice Principals Manjula Dissanayake, Udayani Pathirana, teacher in charge Kumudu Perera, Sandunika Peiris, Fathima Ijasa, along with coach Wasantha Senevirathna, Kumudu Priyanka,  Prefects and Old Girls Association Treasurer Ranoja De Silva Janaranji Liyanage, Commonwealth  Games 2018 Weightlifting Bronze  Medalist Chamari Warnakulasuriya, Head Prefect Oshindi Nethara, teachers and students were also present.

Navy takes hold of smuggled consignment of Tendu leaves in Negombo seas

The Sri Lanka Navy took hold of 02 dinghies with a consignment of smuggled Tendu leaves, during a special operation carried out in the sea area of Negombo today (17th December 2023). The apprehended stock of Tendu leaves weighed over 1143kg. The Navy also nabbed 04 suspects in connection to the illegal act.

To curb illicit activities within the maritime and coastal areas of Sri Lanka, the Navy maintains vigilant surveillance and conducts regular operations. As an extension of these efforts, this coordinated operation was mounted by SLNS Kelani, SLNS Gemunu and SLNS Rangalla, by deploying the Inshore Patrol Craft P 236 in the Negombo sea area today. In this operation, the Navy detected two suspicious dinghies heading toward the shoreline and recovered over 1143kg of Tendu leaves in 35 sacks onboard. The operation also led to the apprehension of the 02 dinghies used for this illegal act, along with 04 suspects in connection to that.

Meanwhile, the apprehended suspects were identified as residents of Negombo, who are from 33 to 53 years of age. The accused along with the stock of Tendu leaves and the dinghies were handed over to the Katunayake Customs Preventive Office for onward legal action.

Sri Lanka Welcomes Delegation from FTI Touristik – Making a Transformation to High-end Tourism

A group of 15 member travel agents from FTI Touristik, which is a world renowned tour operator based in Europe, arrived in Sri Lanka on 9th December 2023 by UL554 from Frankfurt for a one week familiarisation tour. These high-end travel agents have visited the country for the first time, hosted by HOT House of Travels (Pvt) Ltd. 

“The group will cover strategic locations in the paradise Island visiting Dambulla, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Bentota and Colombo. Nalin Malwenna Chairman HOT Tourism told that December 14, the final day is scheduled to be a fellowship with the hotel industry representatives to promote their properties to FTI travel agents followed by a media briefing held at 7 Degrees Restaurant Colombo 5.

“FTI, plans to actively engage in promoting Sri Lanka in Europe for high end tourists as the local citizens demands for tourists who spend. Thus FTI will support self-drive holidays, beach holidays, individual tours,  long-haul tours, package, and modular services” said Paul Hiemo, Director Biz Development HOT Tourism and former Regional Head, FTI. The group will leave the country early December 15.

Trade Minister Nalin Fernando says that various state and commercial legalized corporations have been given permission to import eggs until April 30 next year.

The Trade Minister further told the media that the measures were taken to control the increase in the price of eggs in the market.

An egg is currently sold at a price between 50 and 60 rupees in the market. In order to provide relief to the consumers in such a background, the trade minister said that the eggs which have already been imported will be released to the market for the festive season and that egg will be sold at a price of 35 rupees.
