Economic Recovery Hinges on inclusive Democracy: A strong call for action by the Civil Society Collective for Democracy.

0

The Civil Society Collective for Democracy, also known by its slogan ‘Stand for Democracy’, a coalition of concerned citizens and organizations, including civil society organizations, professionals, academics, trade unions, youth leaders, activists, media personnel, religious figures, and other influencers, convened today at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) to deliver a crucial wake-up call to the nation’s political leaders. The urgent call is to halt state repression and safeguard the democratic rights of the people, in order to ensure actual and equitable economic recovery.

The Civil Society Collective expresses deep concern over the rapid shrinking of democratic space within the country, with Constitutionally guaranteed rights and freedoms such as the freedom of expression, right to information, right to dissent, right to protest, freedom of association and the right to franchise being snatched away, leaving citizens often powerless. This surge in silencing voices and the targeting and harassment of those who question the authorities, have created a chilling effect among the people, leading to self-censorship. Furthermore, the rulers have been abusing the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the contentious Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) to target political opponents, civil society activists, and journalists, contrary to international commitments, including those made at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The recent attempts to introduce extremely oppressive versions of laws such as the Anti-Terrorism Act, Broadcasting Commission Act and the NGO Act are examples of Government’s attempt to threaten and control democratic space.

Recent statements from the President, the Speaker and even few parliamentarians that attempt to undermine judicial independence are deeply troubling. While the 21st Amendment to the Constitution has re-established the independent commissions, the recent acts of intimidation targeting members of the Election Commission and the Public Utilities Commission are examples of the disabling environment that has been created for these institutions. At the heart of the matter, citizens’ sovereign right to vote has been infringed upon using financial constraints as an excuse, an explanation lacking credibility. Currently Sri Lankans have no elected representatives at local and provincial levels and these institutions are governed by unelected officials controlled by a centralised executive. This if not addressed soon may call into question the definition of Sri Lanka as a democracy.

To uplift Sri Lanka from the economic crisis, it is essential to address its root causes – poor governance, lack of inclusivity and corruption. Unless these fundamental issues are addressed, Sri Lanka will continue to be considered as a complex investment context that will discourage investors and thus hamper economic recovery.

Ensuring transparency and accountability in governance is essential to prevent corruption and to ensure good governance. For people to be able to hold their representatives and the stewards of public resources accountable, they need to be able to exercise their democratic rights and freedoms. A truly democratic system would enable citizens to elect and vote out their representatives regularly, be involved and informed of all Government’s decisions that affect their lives, be able to dissent and make their voices heard in protest and be able to form collectives and exert pressure on the authorities to change course when necessary.

A government that acts in the best interest of the people and is genuine in its effort to uplift the economy will not hesitate to expose themselves to public scrutiny.

In line with these principles, the Civil Society Collective for Democracy calls upon the political establishment to take immediate steps to uphold and defend the foundational principles of democracy by:

– Ensuring that free and fair elections essential for inclusion are held on time, starting immediately with the Local Government and Provincial Council Elections.
– Uphold the fundamental rights of citizens, including freedom of expression and association and right to information.
– Protect civic space and create an enabling environment for civil society activism.
– Ensure citizen consultation and participation in steering economic recovery.
– Govern with transparency and accountability, ensuring full public scrutiny.
– Empower the independent commissions to fulfill their roles effectively.
– Take a genuine effort to implement essential anti-corruption reforms.
-Take action to prosecute past and present acts of corruption to end the climate of impunity.

Statement of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Sri LankaOn the Present Situation of the Country

0

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka gathered in Plenary Session in August wishes to express its deep concern about the socio-economic and political situation of Sri Lanka and its impact upon the day-to-day lives of the ordinary masses, for, there is the ever increasing and unbearable cost of living affecting them.

Many parents find it difficult to provide their children with their daily food. Many families with difficulty have only one meal a day. Many hospitals are not in a position to care for people’s health needs and there is a severe shortage of medicines. We are seriously concerned about the increasing number of qualified medical personnel who are leaving the country and many people, particularly the poor, who cannot attend to their medical needs, as often, government hospitals are inadequately supplied with medicines and other medical equipment.

Education too appears to be in jeopardy. Children attend schools without proper nourishment, clothing and the stationery they require. Parents are not in a position to attend to these basic needs.

There is a serious break-down of law and order. Increasing violence seems to be prevailing in the country. Murders are taking place almost on a daily basis and the number of fatal accidents on the roads due to drunken and reckless driving are on the increase.

Besides, there seems to be no clear vision to resolve the immediate basic needs of the people. There is no control of prices of essential items. Many people are on the brink of starvation. The immediate need should be to promote agriculture and other local production to sustain the people. It is shocking to hear that still many food items are being imported including rice, eggs, palm oil, etc., which can be produced locally, if incentives are given to local farmers.

In this dire situation, we, the members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka, earnestly appeal to those in authority to consider the plight of the people seriously before their rhetoric and enacting political dramas, so that the poor and the marginalized could at least sustain their lives with their basic needs.
Sri Lanka is a blessed country and its citizenry talented, and its youth, educated and keen to be participants in its progress. Therefore, we need to create a society where each one’s dignity is valued and appreciated, and peace, harmony and the true manifestation of democracy such as the independence of the Judiciary and the participation of people in the political life of the nation is safeguarded through the holding of free and fair elections. We appeal to our political leadership to be the
instruments of such a political and social renewal and the safeguarding of the dignity and rights of all components of our society.

We call upon all our Catholic faithful to pray and work actively for a social transformation of our society in this manner.

Directed by Nelson, ‘Jailer’, is a 2 hour 48 minute movie starring Rajinikanth in the lead role with Vinayakan, Tamannaah, Shivrajkumar, Mohanlal, Yogi Babu, Sunil, and Jackie Shroff amongst others in supporting roles. The story revolves around retired jailer Muthuvel Pandiyan (Rajinikanth) who goes on a bloodthirsty manhunt to find his son’s (Vasanth Ravi) murderers. But the road takes him on a familiar, somewhat darker path. The end climax will leave viewers shocked. The movie is packed with action, humour and violent scenes, and movie goers in Sri Lankan cinemas applause the Superstar’s grand entries with much excitement! Rajinikanth delivers a powerful performance as expected – playing to perfection the role of a ‘retired’ husband and grandpa, while the younger ‘Pandiyan’, with the ‘Superstar style’ and the famous laughter brings back memories of Rajinikanth from his heyday.
The megastar of the South Indian cinema industry is undoubtedly Rajinikanth. He is the most renowned and successful South Indian actor in history. Shivaji Rao Gaekwad popularly known as “Rajinikanth” has been ruling the Tamil film industry for the past four decades. Born on December 12th, 1950 (age 72 years), Bengaluru, Mysore State (now Karnataka), India, Rajinikanth was brought up speaking Marathi and Kannada. He learnt Tamil while pursuing a diploma in acting from the Madras Film Institute. The actor has done more than 170 films that includes films in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and Malayalam. Rajinikanth considered his idol and inspiration, the Bollywood megastar, Amitabh Bachchan and because of this, he acted in Tamil remakes of Amitabh Bachchan films, such as ”Amar Akbar Anthony” and “Don”. “Bairavi”, directed by M.Bhaskar, was the first Tamil film in 1978 to cast Rajinikanth as a solo hero. It was for this film that he earned the sobriquet “Superstar. Many younger film goers will recall Superstar as “Chitti”, the humanoid robot, in “Robot” made in 2010 starring opposite Aishwarya Rai and its sequel “2.0” starring opposite Bollywood actor, Akshay Kumar. The Superstar’s image was reinvented with the Chitti avatar.

Rajinikanth’s massive popularity locally can be clearly seen as he was recently invited by Sri Lanka to explore the newly-arranged ‘Ramayana Trail’ that is exclusive to the island and also other unique Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. The Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to India, Dr. D. Venkateshwaran, invited Rajinikanth to visit Sri Lanka “as his presence will enhance cinema induced tourism as well as spiritual and wellness tourism”. The Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka met the Padma Bhushan ‘Superstar’ Rajinikanth, at his residence on 29 May 2023. The DHC stated : “As an iconic personality, Mr. Rajinikanth’s charisma will enrich historical relations and reinforce the bridge between the destinations.” Whatever the Superstar does is eagerly followed by his fans in Sri Lanka and worldwide, and the local crowds rushing to watch their celluloid “God“ in the action packed thriller “Jailer”, will not be decreasing any time soon in Colombo as Superstar fever rages on!
