1.94 million rupees returned to victims from cases filed against foreign employment fraudsters…

2620 foreign employment complaints for 2025…

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment states that during the 7 months from January to July this year, cases were filed against individuals and unlicensed employment agencies who engaged in fraudulent foreign employment practices and actions were taken to recover over Rs. 1.94 billion from the victims.

These cases have been filed following special raids carried out on the instructions of the Bureau’s Deputy General Manager, Attorney-at-Law, Mrs. Nelum Samarasekera, and complaints received by the Bureau.

Accordingly, the number of cases filed in court against foreign employment fraudsters in the last 7 months is 567, and the Bureau has received 2620 various complaints during that period. Furthermore, the number of raids carried out by the Special Investigation Division of the Bureau during this period is 05, including one licensed foreign employment agency that engaged in illegal activities. During this period, 36 fraudsters have been arrested. Among them, 07 people from licensed employment agencies are also included.

Meanwhile, the Bureau has succeeded in recovering over Rs. 18.25 million from victims of foreign employment during the year 2024, and the Bureau has received 4658 complaints related to foreign employment last year.

The Bureau informs the public to refrain from paying money to such fraudsters without first consulting the Bureau, as fraudsters are allegedly offering jobs in Israel, South Korea, Japan, Romania and the Middle East.

Furthermore, the Bureau requests that if there are individuals who have fraudulently obtained such money in the past, please report the information about such individuals to the Bureau’s telephone number 1989.

OUTSTANDING SPORTS ACHIEVERS FELICITATED BY THE AIR CHIEF

The Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe in his capacity as the President of the Air Force Sports Council (AFSC), graced a special felicitation ceremony held on 29 July 2025 at Air Force Headquarters. The ceremony honoured sportsmen and women of the SLAF who exceled in various disciplines including Handball, Athletics, Kabaddi, Weightlifting, Badminton, Baseball, Beach Volleyball, Bodybuilding, Hockey, Parachuting, Soccer, Swimming, Triathlon, Water Polo, Wushu and Karate. These individuals have demonstrated outstanding performance at Defence Services, National and International sports championships. In addition, individuals who have achieved excellence at the above levels were recognized and rewarded by the President of the Air Force Sports Council
Among the internationally recognized athletes, Aircraftman Tharanga PR was commended for securing a gold medal at the Perth Track Classic in Australia with a throw of 83.27m, and a bronze medal at the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 in Bengaluru, India with a throw of 84.34m. At the Asian Athletics Championship 2025, Aircraftwoman Fernando MANH contributed to winning two bronze medals in the Women’s 4x400m Relay and Mixed 4x400m Relay events.
At the 9th South Asian Karate Championship 2025 held in Sri Lanka, SLAF athletes delivered strong performances with Aircraftman Brion E winning a gold medal in Individual Kata, while Corporal Dilhan WMSC earned a bronze medal in Individual Kumite 50 kg, Leading Aircraftwoman Fernando PHR secured bronze in Individual Kumite Over 68 kg, Aircraftwoman Peris THD took bronze in Individual Kumite 55 kg, and Aircraftwoman Shashikala UVHD contributed to winning a bronze medal in Team Kumite.
All these athletes were awarded cash prizes and commemorative plaques in recognition of their international achievements.
In addition to honouring specific individuals, the Commander acknowledged the dedication of several coaches for their invaluable contributions in upholding the prestige of the Sri Lanka Air Force in the field of sports. Special appreciation was extended to SLAF Athletics Coaches, Mr. MAT Presanna and Mr. KAR Theekshana, SLAF Handball Coach, Flight Sergeant Rathnayake RMRD, SLAF Karate Coach, Sergeant Edward RJ and SLAF Weightlifting Coach, Mr. GSN Gamage.
The event was attended by the Members of the Air Force Board of Management, as well as Chairmen, Secretaries, Managers and a diverse group of players representing various SLAF Sports Disciplines.

ICT LAW ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2025 announced

The ICT Lawyers’ Guild of Sri Lanka announced its second conference will take place on August 2, 2025, at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo,  at a press meet held in Colombo recently.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sunil Abeyratne, Chairman, ICT Lawyers’ Guild of Sri Lanka, said the   ‘ICT LAW ANNUAL conference 2025: “Law in the Digital Pulse” is aimed at bringing awareness to the legal fraternity of the development and the trends of Artificial Intelligence in today’s context of its use in the legal sphere. The conference will take place on August 2, 2025, at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo. This event will bring in jurists, policymakers, tech innovators, and corporate leaders to address the legal challenges faced in the process of  Sri Lanka’s path to digital transformation. Key topics listed for discussion are Tackling digital threats—cybercrime, AI misuse, and privacy violations, Evaluation of current laws on e-commerce, data protection, and surveillance, and finally, the strengthening of cross-sector collaboration among judiciary, law enforcement, and tech experts.

He also added that among the speakers designated to address the conference are  Parinda Ranasinghe (PC), Attorney General, Supreme Court Justices: Yasantha Kodagoda (PC), A.H.M.D. Nawaz, Kumuduni Wickremasinghe,  Minister of Justice  Harshana Nanayakkara AAL, and Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne.

Finally, Dr. Sunil Abeyaratne added, “Sri Lanka must adopt agile, rights-based legal frameworks to keep pace with the digital world.” Hence, we plan to conclude the conference with actionable recommendations, including ICT legal training, public-private cyber security partnerships, and AI-focused legislative reforms.

“Amal OBA Cricket SAGA 2025”

The Batch of A/L 2022 of the Old Boys’ Association of Amal International School, proudly organized this year’s much-anticipated annual cricket tournament – “Amal OBA Cricket SAGA 2025”, Powered by Lucky Stores. The electrifying event took place on the Sunday July 20 at the Moors Sports Club Grounds, Colombo, and was nothing short of an exciting cricketing carnival.

A total of sixteen teams, made up of spirited Amal old boys, competed in this year’s edition. The teams were divided into four groups, and after a thrilling series of matches, Team 2007 Sixers faced off against Team Last Picks (A/L Batch of 2021) in a nail-biting Grand Finale. Ultimately, the 2007 Sixers triumphed and claimed the coveted title of Champions of SAGA 2025.

The winning team’s captain Azeem Mukthar, received the championship trophy and cash prize from the chief guest Ashen Bandara, a renowned batting all-rounder from the Sri Lankan National Cricket Team.

Individual excellence was also recognized, with the following awards presented:

Best Bowler – M. Waseem (2007 Sixers), Best Batsman – Muhammadh Rizan (2K22 Sharks), Man of the Final – M. Shumail (2007 Sixers) and Most Valuable Player (MVP) – Muhammadh Rizan (2K22 Sharks)

The event was further dignified by the presence of guest of honour, Anfal Hanafi – Managing Director of the Cricket Store, along with Razeen Assan – Principal of Amal International School, Mrs. A.R. Mihilar – Former Deputy Principal and fondly known as the ‘Mother of Amal’, and M. Nilam – CEO of title sponsor, Lucky Stores. These distinguished guests also took part in the awards distribution.

The event was also graced by the presence of OBA President Munshif Munzir, alongside Project Chairpersons Abdullah Fouz and Adnan Nawroos, backed by the SAGA Committee. The tournament brought together a vibrant mix of old boys, teachers, parents, and supporters in a true celebration of unity and legacy.

With over 100,000 viewers tuning in via livestream and more than 300 attendees present onsite, the Amal OBA Cricket SAGA 2025 set a new benchmark in the Amal cricketing tradition, truly a grand success that will be remembered for years to come.

David Pieris Group donates a computer lab to Myiliddy North Kalaimagal Maha Vidyalayam

The David Pieris Group, through its Social Welfare Committee, has donated a fully equipped computer laboratory to Myiliddy North Kalaimagal Maha Vidyalayam in Kankasanthurai, a school located in a recently resettled area in the Northern Province.
This initiative, fully funded by the David Pieris Group’s Social Welfare Committee, aims to support the digital learning needs of over 130 students currently attending the school. Many of these students come from underprivileged backgrounds and have previously had to seek better facilities in surrounding schools due to the lack of resources in their own. The donation includes computers, computer tables. air conditioning machines and computer chairs, along with a complete colour wash of the lab building to create a more conducive learning environment. In addition, the David Pieris Group has committed to funding the monthly remuneration for a qualified IT instructor for a period of one year, ensuring continuity and quality in digital education.
This project is part of the David Pieris Group’s broader commitment to community development, particularly in education and technology access for rural and underserved areas. Myiliddy North Kalaimagal Maha Vidyalayam, having been relocated to its original site after years of displacement, now serves as a vital educational hub for the area and this computer lab is expected to significantly uplift its learning infrastructure.

All set to splash Eastern waters as Navy gears up for TRINEX – 25

The stage is set in Trincomalee as the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) prepares to launch Trincomalee Naval Exercise – 2025 (TRINEX – 25), a dynamic naval exercise unfolding from 22 to 27 Jul 25 along the island’s eastern coast.

Aimed at boosting interoperability and combat readiness, TRINEX – 25 will bring together SLN and Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in a joint operation of maritime strength and precision. The exercise is crafted to ensure SLN ships are prepared to meet operational challenges in the dedicated maritime environment and reach the expected standards of shipborne operations when participating in future local/ international fleet exercises.

Adding muscle to the exercise, SLN fleet units, the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), SLN Marines, and SLAF air assets will take part in this high-tempo exercise, making Trincomalee the epicenter of Sri Lanka’s maritime action this July.
