The event, which centred around the awe-inspiring elephant gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks, offered attendees a once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness and learn about one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles (August 27, 2024, Colombo, Sri Lanka)
The event kicked off with a series of statistically focused thought-provoking sessions led by distinguished conservation subject matter experts. These experts, all highly respected in their fields, shared their knowledge and experiences along with the research they had conducted during the past few years, highlighting the critical need for continued conservation efforts to protect these gentle giants from the threats of habitat loss and human-elephant conflict.
A highlight of the event was the keynote address by renowned Indian conservationist and author Valmik Thapar. Thapar captivated the audience with an immersive storytelling experience, recounting the life of ‘Charger,’ a legendary tiger from Ranthambore National Park in India. His narration brought the wilderness of Ranthambore to life, offering a glimpse into the world of one of India’s most iconic big cats.
In addition to the insightful sessions, participants were guided through the Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks to witness the great gathering of Asian Elephants, where they could directly observe and appreciate the intricate behaviours of the elephant gathering, deepening their understanding of the conservation efforts discussed by the experts. The sight of herds of elephants socialising, bathing, and feeding by the ancient Minneriya tank left attendees with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
The event concluded with a Gala Night dinner, where attendees celebrated the success of ‘The Gathering of Giants’ and reflected on the inspiring discussions and experiences shared over the three days. Seylan Bank’s Signfluencer campaign takes its next big step: Extending Support to Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind in Ratmalana

0

Seylan Bank’s ‘Signfluencer’ campaign, aimed at empowering the hearing and visually impaired, made a significant impact at its launch by spotlighting the need to acknowledge those who are hard of hearing. As a catalyst for growth, the next phase of Seylan Bank’s campaign will lend its support to the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind in Ratmalana
The goal was to empower the school’s visually impaired students by enhancing their computer literacy skills. To this end, Seylan Bank will pave the way, funding instructors and educators in the field.
As the Bank with a Heart, inclusivity is of paramount importance to Seylan Bank. Through this initiative, the bank reaffirms and amplifies its efforts to make all their customers feel valued. The effort underscores the potential for all communities, including the deaf and blind, to aspire to greatness.
The ‘Signfluencer’ campaign created a spotlight on the need to acknowledge the country’s hearing-impaired community. Seylan Bank revealed that Sri Lanka’s distinct variant of sign language is not widely accepted. In celebration of Sign Language Day in 2023, the campaign raised awareness and support for the language’s user community. It encouraged people to recognise sign language as a means of connecting with the community to better understand their needs, largely because the deaf community faces challenges engaging with the wider society of Sri Lanka. Despite being drafted in 2021, the Cabinet-approved bill to recognise Sri Lankan Sign Language as an official language, has yet to be passed.
Seylan Bank operates on the core belief that everyone has the capacity for greatness. As such, they are committed to promoting equity and inclusion. This new campaign aims to create awareness about visually challenged citizens across the country and equalise opportunities for them. This next phase aims to further boost visibility and empowerment for the hearing and visually impaired.
Asiri Abhayaratne, Assistant General Manager – Marketing & Sales, stated, “It is our responsibility as citizens to amplify diversity and inclusivity in Sri Lanka. Our aim is to improve current conditions so that Sri Lankan citizens can live to achieve their fullest potential. We believe that our efforts will help differently abled individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds develop new skills because, as a brand, we firmly believe in the currency of ambition. Our long-term goal is to partner with like-minded institutions to shape infrastructure that provides citizens with disabilities better access to the world around them.”

Seylan Bank, the Bank with a Heart, operates with a vision to offer the ultimate banking experience to its valued customers through cutting-edge technology, innovative products, and best-in-class services. SLT-MOBITEL reaffirms commitment to environment with landmark mangrove restoration project at Puttalam

0

SLT-MOBITEL has embarked on a significant environmental initiative with a new mangrove restoration project at Pubudugama, Wanathavilluwa in Puttalam District. The project, in collaboration with the Department of Forest, aims to restore 4.2 hectares of abandoned shrimp farms and one time slattern into a thriving mangrove ecosystem over the course of five ye
The initiative aligns with the company’s ESG theme ‘Co-Connection’, demonstrating SLT-MOBITEL’s commitment to nurturing a harmonious coexistence between the organisation’s operations, the environment, and society.
The project, spanning five years, involves careful examination of surrounding mangrove vegetation, mimicking the same zonation and species to the area of restoration by planting the right species, collecting required scientific data on survival, growth and natural settlement of plants and maintenance. Most importantly, a bulk of the funds and efforts will be directed to recreating the hydrology so that the tidal water which is the most important type of water for mangrove growth is directed to these heavily altered landscapes.
The mangrove restoration project aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 15: Life on Land. Also, restoration is a key target under Kumming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework of Convention of Biodiversity. This alignment strengthens SLT-MOBITEL’s sustainability reporting and positioning, highlighting the company’s dedication to the 2040 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Mangroves are highly effective at sequestering carbon dioxide and aiding in climate change mitigation. They also act as natural barriers against storm surges and coastal erosion, protecting infrastructure and communities, consequently reducing potential damage to coastal facilities.
Equipped with an environmentally responsible mindset, SLT-MOBITEL aims to leverage the project to support its carbon offset goals. The company’s other environmental preservation efforts include conserving natural habitats, biodiversity, ecosystems, and actively participating in reforestation efforts.
Through the initiative, SLT-MOBITEL aims to engage with local communities and strengthen relationships. The project builds goodwill among local communities by providing employment and educational opportunities. The project will offer additional benefits to these communities as the mangroves improve water quality by filtering pollutants. Additionally, the mangroves will provide resources such as fish and seafood.

The Puttalam mangrove project demonstrates SLT-MOBITEL’s commitment to environmental sustainability and enhances the company’s brand reputation. It also represents the company’s proactive approach to environmental stewardship, reinforcing its commitment to fostering a sustainable future.
