Narcotics Control Unit Intercepts Major Cannabis Smuggling Attempt at BIA

Officers attached to the Narcotics Control Unit of successfully intercepted two Indian nationals attempting to smuggle a significant consignment of narcotics into the country via in the early hours of 4 March 2026.

The suspects, aged 26 and 37, had arrived from Thailand on Flight FD 142 on 3 March 2026. Upon inspection at approximately 1:59 a.m., customs officers discovered substantial quantities of narcotic substances concealed within their hand luggage.

One passeger was found in possession of 1,525 grams of Kush cannabis with an estimated street value of LKR 15,250,000, along with 182 grams of hashish valued at approximately LKR 1,820,000. Another passenger was detected carrying 1,513 grams of Kush cannabis with an estimated street value of LKR 15,130,000.

Following preliminary investigations conducted by , the suspects, together with the seized narcotics and case productions, were handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigation and initiation of legal proceedings.

This interception underscores the continued vigilance and operational efficiency of customs authorities in safeguarding national borders against transnational narcotics trafficking.
