The Government has initiated firm and decisive measures to eradicate irregularities and corruption that have become increasingly prevalent across several sports bodies in the country. This was stated by Media Secretary to the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Tuan Nazeer Amatha, in response to the escalating concerns surrounding governance and accountability within the sporting sector.
Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, he noted that new regulations have been introduced under the directive of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage. These regulations are enacted under Section 41 read with Section 31 of the Sports Law No. 25 of 1973, as amended, and published in Gazette No. 2437/24 dated 21.05.2025.
A key reform includes limiting the tenure of office bearers within sports bodies to a maximum of two terms, with a cumulative period not exceeding eight years. This move is expected to prevent the entrenchment of individuals and reduce the influence of those who enter such institutions with personal or political agendas rather than a genuine commitment to sport.
It has been observed that, over time, certain individuals odf dubious repute and allegations of dishonesty have exploited positions within sports organizations to advance their own interests, undermining transparency and fair play. The consequences have been severe, leading to the loss of talented athletes who are discouraged by malpractice and mismanagement.
Authorities have also made it clear that those found guilty of corruption and malpractice will be held accountable in the near future. With the damage already running deep, these measures signal a strong commitment to rebuilding the credibility and future of sports in the country.
The Government, with the full backing of the President, has taken a firm stance to restore integrity within the sector. Independent committees comprising individuals of the highest integrity will be appointed to oversee and implement these reforms effectively.
Furthermore, the country has suffered significant financial setbacks, particularly in terms of lost sponsorship opportunities and diminished investor confidence.
